Halloween is upon us and with many people out celebrating this weekend, traffic safety should be a top priority when trick-or-treating with your children. In fact, children are more than twice as likely to be hit by a car on Halloween than on any other day of the year.
Sharing the road shouldn’t be scary. The RTC is sharing five tips for a safe and happy Halloween for all:
- On Halloween there will likely be more pedestrians on the roads and in places where they are not expected. Slower speeds save lives.
- Stay alert for pedestrians who may walk out from between parked cars or behind shrubbery. Make sure to stop and wait for them to make it onto a sidewalk before proceeding.
- A responsible adult should accompany young children making their neighborhood rounds. If your older children are going alone, plan and review a route acceptable to you.
- Light up the night! Trick-or-treaters should carry glow sticks or flashlights, use reflective tape or stickers on costumes and bags, and wear light colors to help kids see and be seen by drivers.
- Don’t be a distracted driver. Put down your phone, save the candy for later and focus on the road, especially in high-traffic areas.
