Five tips for a safe Halloween

Halloween is upon us and with many people out celebrating this weekend, traffic safety should be a top priority when trick-or-treating with your children. In fact, children are more than twice as likely to be hit by a car on Halloween than on any other day of the year.

Sharing the road shouldn’t be scary. The RTC is sharing five tips for a safe and happy Halloween for all:

  1. On Halloween there will likely be more pedestrians on the roads and in places where they are not expected. Slower speeds save lives.
  2. Stay alert for pedestrians who may walk out from between parked cars or behind shrubbery. Make sure to stop and wait for them to make it onto a sidewalk before proceeding.
  3. A responsible adult should accompany young children making their neighborhood rounds. If your older children are going alone, plan and review a route acceptable to you.
  4. Light up the night! Trick-or-treaters should carry glow sticks or flashlights, use reflective tape or stickers on costumes and bags, and wear light colors to help kids see and be seen by drivers.
  5. Don’t be a distracted driver. Put down your phone, save the candy for later and focus on the road, especially in high-traffic areas.
