We are most commonly known as the public transit agency but another one of our core operations, that is just as important, is our planning department called the Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO).This team has been continuing to work during the pandemic moving transportation and regional planning studies forward.
One of them is the Coordinated Transportation Plan, which aims to enhance mobility for vulnerable populations including seniors, people with disabilities, and low-income individuals. One aspect of the plan looks at how to better utilize the existing supplemental transportation services. This includes both private and public transportation providers like the RTC’s Silver Star Routes and Veterans Medical Transportation Network, as well as the Southern Nevada Transit Coalition, Helping Hands of Vegas Valley and many more.
A public comment period started earlier this week and will continue until May 31, 2020, and it’s important that you review and weigh-in on the draft plan. We know getting through the 112-page document might be a little too time consuming so here’s an executive summary of everything you need to know.
In collaboration with public, private, and non-profit transportation and human service providers, the draft plan includes:
- A list of agencies and organization that provide transportation services
- transportation needs, duplicated services, and regional service area gaps
- Evaluation of existing and potential funding sources
The proposed goals of the Coordinated Transportation Plan are to:
- Expand mobility options and resources
- Increase awareness of transportation options
- Leverage available technology
- Improve connections to transit facilities
- Expand regional collaboration among entities and social service organizations
