Considering cycling to work? Congratulations because it’s a great way to commute for many reasons – it’s good for the environment, it’s less expensive than a car, it’s a healthy habit and it just so happens that May is National Bike Month! But before you head out, make sure you’re prepared.
CLOTHING – If you have a short trip to work, you may be able to wear your work clothing, but if you have a longer ride, you may want to wear something different and bring your work attire. Make sure the clothing is comfortable and to dress in layers if it’s chilly and if possible, wear something that is reflective to keep you safe and visible.
ITEMS TO PACK – Of course, you’ll want to pack your clothing, but a few other items to have just in case include personal hygiene items, lunch, water, your wallet, keys, cell phone, and a bike lock, if necessary.
SAFETY – Make sure your bike is in good working order the night before your ride and gather safety equipment like a helmet and eye protection. Also, brush up on the rules of the road before you head out. A quick guide to bicycle safety can be found on the Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles’ website.
ROUTE – Plan your route ahead of time, looking for clearly marked bike lanes. Also, if possible utilize one of the many bike paths throughout the valley. Check out the RTC website for bike trail maps.
If you want even more guidance, you can take part in a workshop such as “Commuting in Vegas” at the RTC Bike Center inside Bonneville Transit Center, located at 101 E. Bonneville Ave.
There’s still time to register for the workshop on May 17 from 4 to 5:30 p.m., but if you can’t make it, check the RTC website for future opportunities.
