Armed Forces Day is May 21 this year and marks an important opportunity to honor service members from every branch of the U.S. military – Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force and Coast Guard.

Not to be confused with Veterans Day or Memorial Day, Armed Forces Day was first conceived by President Harry S. Truman in 1949 and made an official holiday by President John F. Kennedy in 1961.

The day is part of a month-long celebration of America’s military members.

  • Military Spouse Appreciation Day – May 6, 2022: Honors military spouses and the important role military families play in keeping the country safe.
  • Victory in Europe Day – May 8, 2022: Marks the end of World War II in Europe.
  • Armed Forces Week – May 14-21, 2022: The week leading up to Armed Forces Day honoring past and present service members.
  • Memorial Day – May 30, 2022: Commemorates the men and women who died while in military service.

In response to the growing number of veterans throughout Southern Nevada, the RTC offers veterans a 50-percent discount off full-priced fare through the RTC’s Reduced Fare Program. The RTC also offers Veterans Medical Transportation Network service for senior and disabled veterans, which provides effective and efficient transportation for veterans between their homes and Veteran Affairs approved medical appointments within the RTC service area.
