High summer temperatures are nothing new to those of us living in Las Vegas, but that doesn’t mean we’re immune to the dangerous effects. That’s why the Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada (RTC) took strong efforts to find new ways to help riders stay cool and hydrated when the temperature started to rise. During this year’s annual Summer Heat campaign, RTC staff members handed out water to nearly 4,000 riders at more than a dozen events.
In addition to the water, over the course of nearly two months riders were given another tool to combat heat: sunscreen. A new partnership with Comprehensive Cancer Centers allowed us to distribute thousands of packets of sunscreen to help riders protect themselves from the sun’s UV rays, as well as cooling towels to help lower body temperatures. The RTC also partnered with Lyft to offer discounts on Lyft rides to help transit riders avoid having to walk long distances in the heat to and from transit stops.
