RTC launches 2024 Summer Heat awareness campaign to keep transit riders safe in the heat

Campaign offers free water, sunscreen, and more during weekly events all summer long

LAS VEGAS – Get ready to beat the heat with the Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada’s (RTC) annual Summer Heat campaign, kicking off tomorrow, June 11. As the summer sun turns up the heat in Vegas, the RTC is teaming up with local partners to keep transit riders safe, cool, and refreshed while waiting at transit centers and bus stops.

Given that Southern Nevada is one of the nation’s fastest-warming metro areas, the RTC is taking extra steps to help riders stay safe during the summer months. From June 11 through September 3, the RTC’s Summer Heat campaign offers riders a slew of free goodies and vital safety tips. Community partners will distribute free water, sunscreen, lip balm, and more to help riders stay cool and protected.

“Rider safety is one of our top priorities, especially during the intense Las Vegas heat,” said M.J. Maynard, RTC chief executive officer. “Las Vegas already hit triple digit temperatures the first week of June, underscoring the importance of our work to help riders navigate the heat with tips and free water and essential items provided by our generous partners. Staying safe during summer heat is a community responsibility and effort, and we appreciate the contributions of our partners to help keep our passengers cool and safe all summer long.”

This year’s campaign features a lineup of new and returning community partners offering sun-safe resources like free sunscreen, water, lip balm, sunglasses, and more. Partners include:

  • Centennial Subaru
  • Comprehensive Cancer Centers
  • Cox Communications
  • GCW Engineering
  • Jacobs Engineering
  • Las Vegas-Clark County Library District
  • Las Vegas Paving
  • Nevada Health Link
  • Republic Services
  • Terrible Herbst
  • Transdev

The RTC urges all riders, especially older adults, children, and those with medical conditions, to take extra precautions in triple-digit temperatures. Here are some tips to stay cool this summer:

  • Check local weather forecasts and plan accordingly.
  • Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing.
  • Use sunscreen and wear protective gear like hats and sun visors.
  • Plan activities early in the morning or later in the evening.
  • Limit time outside by planning rides through the free rideRTC app.
  • Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water regularly.
