April is an important month for road safety awareness as it marks both National Work Zone Awareness Week (NWZAW) and Distracted Driving Awareness Month. NWZAW, taking place from April 17 to April 20, is a time to remind drivers to be mindful when encountering work zones, while Distracted Driving Awareness Month emphasizes the importance of staying focused while behind the wheel.

Both events share a common goal of reducing the number of accidents and fatalities on our roads, making it a critical time to prioritize safe driving practices. Work zones can be hazardous places for both drivers and construction workers. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there were 872 fatalities in work zone crashes in 2021 alone. Drivers must take extra care when passing through these areas.

Follow the tips below to help ensure optimal safety in work zones:

Pay attention to the signs

Work zones are marked with signs that provide important information, such as speed limits, lane closures, and detours in order to provide proper navigation of vehicles.

Slow down

Work zones often require reduced speeds, so it is essential to slow down and follow the posted speed limits. Be prepared to stop suddenly if necessary.

Be patient

Construction work can be time-consuming, so drivers must exercise patience when passing through work zones. Avoid abrupt lane changes or sudden stops that could put yourself and others at risk.

Avoid distractions

Distracted driving is one of the leading causes of accidents. Drivers must avoid using their phones or other electronic devices while driving, especially when passing through work zones. Eating or drinking while driving may seem harmless, but it can be a distraction that takes your attention away from the road.

Stay alert

Work zones can be unpredictable, and unexpected obstacles can appear suddenly. Drivers must remain alert and focused at all times to react quickly to any situation that arises.
