We understand the frustration of having your commutes delayed by construction and navigating around orange cones, but roadway construction is crucial for keeping up with our region's growth. This year's Work Zone Awareness Week (WZAW) reminds us that while construction may be temporary, the consequences of our actions behind the wheel can be permanent.

As we wrap up this year's WZAW, let's take a moment on Friday, April 19, to honor those who lost their lives in work zone accidents. Shockingly, in 2021 alone, over 106,000 crashes occurred in work zones nationwide, resulting in 956 fatalities, including 108 construction workers. Here in Clark County, from October 2022 to October 2023, there were 1,636 work zone crashes, resulting in 7 fatalities.

Let's show patience and understanding towards construction workers striving to enhance our roads and ensure safer travels for everyone. Remember, safety is everyone’s job, including yours.

Here are some tips to make your trips safer:

  • Plan your route ahead of time and expect delays.
  • Follow posted speed limits and construction signs, and obey flaggers.
  • Only resume normal speeds when it's safe to do so.
  • Avoid distractions, especially being on your phone.
  • Always wear your seatbelt and never drive under the influence or when tired.
  • Drive cautiously, watching for workers and vehicles entering or exiting work zones.
  • Maintain a safe distance between vehicles, construction equipment, and workers.
