More technology, less congestion: revolutionizing transportation

It’s no secret that Las Vegas has always been famous for its glitz and glamour, but we’re also being recognized nationally for our get-up-and-go attitude in transportation.

We are expanding our efforts to manage congestion and roadway safety and to help make it all happen, Waycare is deploying the largest integration of connected vehicle data in the nation here in Southern Nevada.

Waycare, a leading provider of artificial intelligence-driven mobility solutions for smart cities, has an ongoing partnership with the Southern Nevada Traffic Management Center (TMC) run by the RTC, Nevada Highway Patrol (NHP), and the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) to improve traffic safety and incident management.

Waycare’s artificial intelligence platform enables detection of significantly more incidents and faster validation and response to roadway incidents, ultimately allowing traffic to flow again, reducing the chance of secondary accidents and preventing further delays. Waycare has enabled the TMC to identify and respond to crashes up to 12 minutes faster and uncover 17 percent more incidents than previously reported.

Through new partnerships with multiple smart mobility firms, Waycare will obtain and analyze data from thousands of connected vehicles, such as driving behavior, intersection wait times, location, and speed. The new insights enhance the RTC’s ability to investigate causes of roadway incidents, respond faster to reduce congestion and secondary crashes, and deploy preventative actions.

Waycare first made the announcement at the GO-NV Summit during the week of Consumer Electronics Show (CES). The same week, the RTC had the pleasure of hosting guests from the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) and showing them what Southern Nevada is truly made of – forward-thinking leaders who embrace innovative ideas and are willing to try new technologies to improve age-old problems.

USDOT Deputy Assistant Secretary for Transportation Policy Finch Fulton and Federal Transit Administration (FTA) Acting Administrator K. Jane Williams both addressed the crowd at the GO-NV Summit about shifts occurring at the federal level to address the future of autonomous and multimodal transportation.

Administrator Williams had the opportunity to see first-hand projects that are home to Las Vegas, including the BMW 5 series vehicles operated by Aptiv autonomous technology; the Strip and Downtown Express (SDX) bus rapid transit route that runs on its own dedicated lane; and the next phase of the Waycare project.

“Glitz, glamour and go” may just become our new motto here in Las Vegas.
