The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) is advising drivers to plan ahead for two nights of overnight directional closures on Interstate 15 (I-15) and nearby ramps. These closures will allow for critical work on Active Traffic Management (ATM) signs as part of the I-15/Tropicana project.
Closure Schedule
9:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 4 to 5:00 a.m. Thursday, December 5
- Southbound I-15 closed from Flamingo Road to Russell Road.
- Flamingo Road and Harmon Avenue on-ramps to southbound I-15 closed.
- Southbound I-15 off-ramps to eastbound/westbound Tropicana Avenue and Russell Road closed.
- Southbound flyover ramp to eastbound Tropicana Avenue remains closed.
- Northbound I-15 reduced to three lanes between Hacienda Avenue and Flamingo Road.
9:00 p.m. Thursday, December 5 to 5:00 a.m. Friday, December 6
- Northbound I-15 closed from Russell Road to Tropicana Avenue.
- Westbound I-215 ramp to northbound I-15 closed (access to Frank Sinatra Drive and Russell Road maintained).
- Las Vegas Boulevard ramp to northbound I-15 closed.
- Southbound I-15 reduced to three lanes between Flamingo Road and Hacienda Avenue.
Why These Closures Are Necessary
The closures will facilitate the maintenance of Active Traffic Management (ATM) signs, which are cutting-edge, full-color LED displays designed to improve safety and traffic flow. These signs provide real-time updates on traffic conditions, helping drivers anticipate and respond to lane closures, congestion, or crashes.
Did You Know?
- Powerful Tech: Ten ATM signs have been installed as part of the I-15/Tropicana project, with single-span signs weighing an average of 46,000 pounds—equivalent to four adult elephants. The largest spans weigh over 100,000 pounds!
- Dynamic Functionality: These signs can adjust speed limits or provide lane-use instructions based on live traffic data, reducing delays and improving safety.
- Proven Benefits: Similar systems in other states have reduced secondary crashes by up to 30%, a vital improvement in high-traffic areas like Southern Nevada.
Plan Ahead for Alternate Routes
Motorists are encouraged to exercise caution in work zones and use alternate routes to avoid delays. NDOT collaborates with Waze to keep the public informed of planned restrictions. Please note, schedules are subject to change due to weather or other factors.
