Cyclists of all skill levels came out to Heritage Park on Friday, Nov. 19 to participate in the Bike Safety and Maintenance event, hosted by Henderson Mayor and Regional Transportation Commission (RTC) Chairwoman, Debra March, Boulder City Mayor Pro Tem, Claudia Bridges, the Southern Nevada Bicycle Coalition (SNVBC) and Bicycle Transit Systems (BTS).

The three-part presentation began with a bike safety discussion with avid cyclists and wrapped up with a skills course training exercise followed by a one-mile bike ride.

During the presentation, participants learned bike safety tips, including how to:

-Be visible to drivers

-Protect your head

-Travel bicycle-friendly routes

-Be predictable

-Ride defensively

In addition to safety tips, cyclists learned the ABCs of bike maintenance, which are:

A – is for air.  Always check your tire pressure before heading out for a ride.

B – is for brakes.  Always make sure your brakes are working properly.

C – is for chain.  Be sure to check your chain to make sure it’s fitting properly and free of rust and gunk.

Bike safety and maintenance doesn’t have to end here. Learn more by visiting the Southern Nevada Bicycle Coalition’s (SNVBC) website, and find bicycle-friendly routes around your neighborhood by downloading the RTC Bike Map.
