April carries a long list of causes for awareness. This includes National Crime Victims’ Rights Week and Stress and Alcohol Awareness Month. That’s where Mothers Against Drunk Driving comes in to play. It is important to recognize the role alcohol plays in driving under the influence and the effects it can have in our community.

DUI’s are typically thought of as an event where someone is driving drunk. Although, DUI’s happen when someone is driving under the influence of alcohol or substances, whether legal or illegal.

Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD)’s mission is to end drunk driving, help fight drugged driving, support the victims of these violent crimes and prevent underage drinking. The organization has been around since 1980 when Candy Lightner founded MADD after losing her daughter to a crash caused by someone driving drunk. MADD has definitely grown. It is now a national non-profit operating out of all 50 states, Puerto Rico, and Canada.

MADD Nevada believes that impaired driving is 100% a choice and 100% preventable.

Below are tips on how you can stay safe on the roads:

  1. Establish your ride home before going out.
  2. Download a rideshare app and make sure your phone is charged.
  3. Download the rideRTC App and plan your route home on transit. Residents can pay $3 for a 2-hour pass or $5 for a 24-hour pass.
  4. Take a taxi
  5. If possible, stay where you are if you have been drinking and do not have a ride home.
  6. Assign a designated driver before heading out.
  7. Call a friend or family member to pick you up.

Beyond MADD’s mission to encourage people not to drive impaired, if there is a crash, MADD helps victims and their families navigate through their new reality. MADD NV provides victim services, underage prevention services, legislative advocacy and more.
