If you heard cheering and clapping across the valley last week, it came from the RTC. Last week, we were informed that we’re receiving more than $7 million in federal funding to support safety and sustainability initiatives that will help you – our customers!
Through the Federal Transit Administration’s Buses and Bus Facilities Program, the RTC will be receiving a $4.87 million grant to purchase three hydrogen fuel cell electric buses and add solar lighting to 250 bus stops. This will help us advance our sustainability goal of having a fully electric transit fleet by 2035, as well as enhance safety for riders at many of our bus stops.
And through the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2022, we have been earmarked $2.14 million that we will use to buy electric buses for the Maryland Parkway Bus Rapid Transit project and expand the RTC Bike Share Program with two more stations and 60 additional bikes.
It’s a very exciting time for us as we look toward expanding sustainable mobility options for our community. We couldn’t have done it without the support of federal delegation!
