The Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada (RTC) is a regional government agency that performs many transportation activities within the Southern Nevada community. The RTC was created in 1965 by state statute and in 1981, the agency was named the state Metropolitan Planning Organization for the Las Vegas urban area.
The RTC is responsible to state and federal governments for maintaining a continuing, cooperative and comprehensive transportation planning process and for overseeing the distribution of federal funding for street and highway planning and construction. Together with the State, it carries out the planning and programming activities necessary for federal funding assistance through its Transportation Improvement Program (TIP), a four-year plan, and the Regional Transportation Program (RTP), a more than 20-year plan that shows air quality conformity. That means that all the planned projects and programs combined improve our air quality to meet federal standards.
As the Metropolitan Planning Organization for Southern Nevada, the RTC is helping to create sustainable communities. Truly sustainable communities support all types of transportation, including walking, biking and mass transit. These alternative types of travel are key to cutting congestion in the Las Vegas Valley.
